"1.  Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me:  It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

"2.  Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. ...

"7.  For I would that all men were even as I myself.  But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

"8.  I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.

"9.  But if they cannot contain, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn."

Thank you for your frank response to my letter.  As far as I can see, we share the same opinion about the deviant teachings of Joseph Smith, Jr. and those who have propagated them for the past 175 years.  The evidence indicates that even before April 6, 1830 Joseph Smith, Jr. and his associates were on a deviant course and that organizing a church without precedent or commandment from God was one of the major steps in departure from the teachings upon which they had been commanded to rely.

This point of departure can be shown in Church History and the Book of Mormon should not be held accountable to answer for the one who was told by an angel that his name would be had for both good and evil among all nations and kindreds.  Should it surprise us that the Angel was far more literal in his prophecy than Smith ever imagined?  Is it possible to distinguish where the "good" left off and the "evil" began?  I am fully confident that it can in a convincing way.

This should make us aware of the mistake of "Throwing the baby out with the bathwater" and thereby forfeiting the wealth of what the Book of Mormon has to teach.  To say that the Book of Mormon is full of errors may appeal to persons who have never read the book for themselves, or who have failed to really study it.

The context of Isaiah 29 which prophesies of the appearance of a "book" in the latter days just prior to the return of the Jews to the Holy Land, suggests that the book would be brought forth to a generation of religious hypocrites whose 'walk' did not measure up to their 'talk'.  Did Isaiah get it right?  Should we be surprised that God employed such a method with which to bring forth His Holy Word as a “vision of all"?  This compares with the question of why God would reveal His Only Begotten Son to a nation of religious profligates who would "crucify their own God" if He got in the way of their traditions and religion.  God does work in mysterious ways His wonders to perform.

We live in a day when the Holy Word of God is being maligned at every level of society....even in churches who profess devotion to the Scriptures, but whose interests are clearly elsewhere.  The Bible needs a true friend to bolster it against this insidious erosion, by re-affirming its credibility.  No, this does not mean that another gospel should take the place of that one taught in its pages as Joseph Smith, Jr. professed to do in his BOOK OF COMMANDMENTS and DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS and INSPIRED TRANSLATION.  But the Bible and Book of Mormon should speak with the same spiritual voice above the cacophony of other would-be cibles such as Swedenborg, Oahspe, The Urantia Bible, Archko Volumes, the Nag Hamadi Codex and the Gnostic Scriptures.

The Bible is not as flawed as Smith-ism would have us to believe, to where an INSPIRED TRANSLATION became necessary to restore its pristine integrity and the Gospel of Salvation needed to be re-written to more modern standards.  Such unwarranted suppositions are fatally flawed.

The only way out of the present impasse is to let the Book of Mormon speak for itself, and fulfill its mission of restoring hope to the scattered remnants of the House of Israel as modern Christianity implodes upon itself.

It is too soon to write the Book of Mormon off.  It still has a testimony to bear to those who have an ear to hear and a heart to receive it.

Dear Papa Maley:

I respect your position, especially since it was almost exactly the way I was raised.  I thank you for sharing your views with me, and invite you to continue sharing whatever you like of your many experiences, spiritual and otherwise.

My primary interest is seeing that people who are trapped in
Mormonism find a real relationship with Jesus Christ and end up really saved.  I understand that a person can still hang on to remnants of Mormonism and still be saved.  I would put my father who is now with the Lord in that category.  You are right.  The Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ is contained in the Book of Mormon, and those key provisions have long since been abandoned by nearly all organizations which claim to believe it.

Of course, I go one step further and believe that they and you are still spiritually related.  That is because the Book of Mormon not only contains the true Gospel, but also a lot of other things which depart from that Gospel.  Taken as a whole, I consider it to be no different than a lot of other deceptive schemes of the enemy of our souls.  If he can't get a person entirely off track, he will still try to do what damage he can.

Of course, I am concerned about the spiritual health of all who
have been affected by the "ministry" of Joseph Smith.  I was given up as a lost soul when I laid down the Book of Mormon, but determined to see that others who did "go haywire" after leaving Mormonism should be able to understand that they can still follow Christ and really be saved and have a good life through faith in the Bible alone.

I wish you the best!  Do please keep writing!

Dear Bro. Maley:

A quick check of the internet on Emanuel Swedenborg brought up these doctrines which Joseph Smith introduced into Mormonism well after the Book of Mormon was published:

1)  Spirits are made out of matter.

2)  Marriage continues after death.

3)  Salvation is not through faith alone.

4)  "All people who live good lives, no matter what their religion, have a place in heaven."

5)  Eternal progression.

6)  Faith is a kind of inner sight, a perception of what is true.

Of course, David Whitmer, one of the three "witnesses" of the golden plates of the Book of Mormon, got disgusted with Joseph Smith, because he said that Sidney Rigdon and others of the inner circle, would discuss things and then Joseph Smith would "prophesy" it, and it would become part of the Mormon doctrine.  But you know all about that!

God bless!

Dean Helland

Prayer of Salvation:

Lord Jesus, I thank you for your Holy Word, the Bible, which reveals the plan of salvation which is so simple.  I repent for thinking that a church could save me when you only ask me to come to you in simple faith.  Lord, I have heard your knock at the door of my heart.  I open that door and ask you to come in.  I believe that you lived a sinless life, took my sins upon you when you died on the cross, and are now at the right hand of the Father, praying for me.

I renounce Mormonism and everything associated it.  I ask for release from all the spirits of deception I have allowed in my life by doubting your holy Word and following the teachings of men.  Cleanse me with your shed blood.  I believe.  I receive you now as my Lord and Savior.  I will seek out a church which teaches the Bible as the guide for my life.  I will be re-baptized as a testimony of my new-found faith.  I give you my life.  Do with me what you will.  I promise never leave you, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Thank you, Jesus!  Amen!

If you prayed this prayer sincerely, please contact Dr. Dean at the email address below and let him know about it.  He will see that you receive the guidance necessary to keep you in the ways of the Lord.  Of course, your name and email address will be kept confidential.
